The Times Open Speaker Series runs employee-only talks about design, technology, and running a newsroom.
The team had outgrown its simple Google Sites homepage, and wanted a new home. Our most important constraint was that attendees should be able to RSVP in just a few clicks.
Strong art direction, engineering, and the desire to create something unique helped us push The Times's style guide in an unusual direction. We came up with a brutalist, stripped down aesthetic, that worked well on both desktop and mobile.
To build fast, we came up with a comprehensive style guide. This gave the team a strong starting point for the build, and also the flexibility to iterate in the future.
The site is currently in use, and it continues to expand as the team introduces new events.
